Appearing on James Martin’s Saturday Morning, singer Lulu opened up about her renewed focus on health as she prepares to tour again at 75. Known for her iconic hit “Shout,” Lulu shared that recent health concerns led her to adopt significant lifestyle changes.
Having learned that her cholesterol was elevated—a condition her father also faced—Lulu explained, “It really frightened me, as it’s one of the biggest risk factors for coronary heart disease.” She noted that her father’s passing at 71, due to high cholesterol, influenced her decision to prioritize her own well-being. “My father worked in the Glasgow meat market for years and was a wonderful singer, but he didn’t take care of his health and ignored warnings,” she reflected.
Lulu’s Health-Conscious Lifestyle Changes
Following her health scare, the “Love Loves to Love Love” singer overhauled her diet, eliminating ice cream and butter. Starting her day with hot water and lemon, Lulu opts for a breakfast of porridge or yogurt with granola.
“I’d give myself a nine out of ten for health,” she said. “I’ve always been careful about exercise and eating organic, because of the chemicals in non-organic produce.” She now prioritizes dark, leafy greens like watercress and enjoys green bean soup, often bringing a flask on tour. Additionally, Lulu stays hydrated with a daily intake of water mixed with cranberry juice and drinks ginger tea before going on stage, which she says helps clear her vocal cords.
Lulu has been candid about previous health battles, including a severe bout of pneumonia in 2012. “I thought it was just a cough and kept touring,” she revealed. “When I returned to London, the doctor told me I should have been hospitalized.”
These lifestyle adjustments, Lulu says, help support her demanding schedule and allow her to continue sharing her music with fans.
