Beirut, Oct 23 – Upon her arrival in Beirut, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock expressed deep concern over the escalating humanitarian crisis in Lebanon. She highlighted the growing desperation as hundreds of thousands flee their homes, families are torn apart, and hospitals reach capacity. “Lebanon is on the verge of collapse,” Baerbock warned.
She also condemned militants hiding among civilians and launching missiles at Israel from Lebanon, calling such actions “unacceptable.” However, Baerbock emphasized that Israel must balance its right to self-defense with adherence to international humanitarian law to safeguard innocent lives.
Baerbock reiterated Germany’s support for UN peacekeepers in the region, particularly UNIFIL troops, stressing that any attacks on them would be a breach of international law. She commended Israel for weakening Hezbollah in recent weeks and called for a diplomatic solution that addresses the security needs of both Israel and Lebanon.
Baerbock’s visit aims to explore ways to implement UN Resolution 1701 and support Lebanon’s armed forces. Her talks in Beirut and at the upcoming Lebanon conference in Paris will focus on easing humanitarian suffering while advancing the peace process.
This marks Baerbock’s fourth visit to Lebanon since October 2023, as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to address the Middle East conflict.
