Ratan Tata, the former chairman of Tata Sons, one of India’s largest companies, is in critical condition. He is receiving intensive care at a hospital in Mumbai, according to two sources on Wednesday.
On Monday, 86-year-old Tata said he was undergoing routine medical checks due to age and health concerns.
A spokesperson for Tata has not yet provided an update on his condition as of Wednesday.
Known for his strong values, Tata earned the respect of business leaders and the public. He became chairman of Tata Group in 1991. The company expanded into a global business worth over $100 billion during his leadership. He retired in December 2012 and was succeeded by Cyrus Mistry, who died in a car crash in 2022.
After retirement, Tata was named chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, Tata Motors, Tata Steel, Tata Industries, and Tata Chemicals. He remains involved with charitable trusts and is a member of the advisory boards for Mitsubishi Corporation and JP Morgan Chase.
In 2008, the Indian government awarded Tata the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second-highest civilian honour.
